Who Is Jagger Briggs Mauney?

Jagger Briggs Mauney is the son of James Burton “J.B.” Mauney, a two-time Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Champion. His mother, Samantha Lyne, qualified for the National Finals Rodeo as a barrel racer. His maternal grandfather, Phil Lyne, was also a celebrated rodeo champion.

Jagger was born at 4:21 a.m. on January 23, 2019. PBR announced his birth three days later, confirming his name and parents. He turned seven in January 2026, although his exact birthplace has not been reliably established in public reporting.

Early Life and Childhood in Texas

Jagger spent his early childhood during the final years of his father’s competitive career. In June 2019, his parents brought him to a bull-riding event in Bismarck, North Dakota. PBR reported that J.B. enjoyed watching recordings of legendary riders, including Jerome Davis, Tuff Hedeman, and Cody Lambert, with his young son.

The family has been publicly associated with Stephenville, Texas, where J.B. maintains ranching operations involving bucking bulls. An April 2024 Washington Post feature described Jagger watching professional riders practice and imitating their movements. He also had child-sized riding equipment, including boots, chaps, and a glove.

Growing up around livestock and rodeo competitors has introduced Jagger to the sport from an early age. However, his childhood experiences should not be mistaken for evidence of a professional career.

Meet Jagger Briggs Mauney’s Parents

Father: J.B. Mauney

Born in North Carolina, J.B. Mauney became one of professional bull riding’s most recognizable competitors. Known as “The Dragon Slayer,” he earned a reputation for challenging exceptionally difficult bulls and refusing to back down from demanding rides.

He won PBR World Championships in 2013 and 2015. One of his defining achievements came in 2013, when he successfully rode Bushwacker, ending the bull’s streak of 42 consecutive buck-offs.

Across his career, Mauney recorded 538 qualified rides in PBR’s premier series and earned more than $7.4 million in documented PBR competition winnings. Those earnings reflect his sporting accomplishments, not his current net worth or his son’s financial circumstances.

Away from competition, Mauney has spoken about encouraging his children to develop confidence and perseverance. He has also emphasized that their future careers should remain their own decisions.

Mother: Samantha Lyne Mauney

Samantha Lyne Mauney has her own competitive rodeo background. She participated in professional barrel racing, a timed event requiring a horse and rider to navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. Her achievements include qualifying for the 2014 National Finals Rodeo.

Samantha is the daughter of legendary rodeo competitor Phil Lyne. She also attended Texas Christian University and pursued studies in interior design, according to The Washington Post.

Samantha and J.B. married in January 2017, two years before Jagger’s birth. Her athletic background means that both sides of his immediate family have strong connections to professional rodeo.

The Mauney Family’s Rodeo Legacy

His grandfather, Phil Lyne

Jagger’s maternal grandfather, Phil Lyne, earned five professional rodeo world championships. His accomplishments included two all-around titles, two tie-down roping championships, and one steer roping championship.

Lyne entered the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 and received recognition in the PBR Ring of Honor in 2007. His success across multiple disciplines distinguished him as one of rodeo’s most versatile competitors.

Phil Lyne died on August 14, 2026, at age 79. His family’s published obituary specifically identified Jagger among his grandchildren, confirming their relationship.

Does Jagger have siblings?

Jagger has a paternal half-sister named Bella Mauney, J.B.’s daughter from an earlier relationship. PBR confirmed their sibling relationship in its January 2019 birth announcement.

Bella has remained largely outside extensive media coverage. J.B. has nevertheless discussed both children when speaking about family responsibilities and the values he hopes to teach them.

Education and Early Interest in Bull Riding

Details about Jagger’s education remain limited. The Washington Post reported that he attended preschool in 2024 and visited the family ranch afterward. His school name and subsequent educational arrangements have not been publicly verified.

Jagger has shown an early interest in riding and ranch activities. A January 2025 Cowboys & Indians feature described footage from summer 2024 showing five-year-old Jagger riding calves at the family’s property near Stephenville.

These experiences demonstrate his familiarity with rodeo activities, but no verified professional championship, ranking, or formal competitive career has been established.

J.B. Mauney’s Retirement and Family Life

In September 2023, J.B. suffered a serious neck injury while riding Arctic Assassin at a rodeo in Lewiston, Idaho. The injury ended his professional bull-riding career, changing a family routine that had involved frequent travel and competition.

Jagger was four years old when his father retired. In Cowboys & Indians, Mauney described the difficulty of explaining the transition to a son accustomed to attending rodeos.

After retirement, Mauney continued working with bucking bulls, mentoring younger competitors, and participating in rodeo-related media. He became head coach of the Oklahoma Wildcatters in 2024, remaining involved through the 2025 season.

PBR reported that Mauney and the Wildcatters mutually agreed to separate on February 20, 2026. Greg Rhodes subsequently became the team’s head coach.

Public Appearances and Media Coverage

Jagger has occasionally accompanied his father to major rodeo events. In May 2024, he appeared beside J.B. during a PBR career tribute at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, wearing a matching denim outfit.

Another significant appearance came on July 10, 2025, when J.B. was inducted into the PBR Ring of Honor at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Six-year-old Jagger joined his father onstage and held the ring box during the ceremony, according to The Oklahoman.

Jagger has also appeared alongside his father during interviews and commentary for The Mauney Cast. These appearances reflect his involvement in family activities rather than an independently established media career.

As of October 2026, there is no reliable evidence of a major individual professional project, championship, or paid presenting role involving Jagger.

His Father’s Parenting Philosophy

J.B. Mauney has publicly emphasized determination as an important lesson for both Jagger and Bella. During a June 2019 PBR interview, he summarized his approach with the words, “You try. You don’t quit.”

However, he has not insisted that Jagger pursue professional bull riding. In a January 2025 interview with Cowboys & Indians, Mauney remarked, “Maybe he’ll ride, or maybe he’ll play piano or something.”

His comments reflect a willingness to support his son’s interests without predetermining his future. While Jagger enjoys activities associated with rodeo, he is still young enough to explore different interests as he grows.

Will Jagger Briggs Mauney Become a Bull Rider?

Jagger’s family background makes professional bull riding a natural subject of public curiosity. His father is a two-time world champion, his mother competed at the National Finals Rodeo, and his grandfather achieved success across several rodeo disciplines.

Nevertheless, there is no confirmed indication that Jagger has chosen bull riding as a career. His calf-riding experiences and public appearances demonstrate an early connection to the sport, not a commitment to professional competition.

His education, future interests, and eventual career remain personal matters that will develop over time.
